Spoken dialogue systems have become an increasingly important aspect of human-computer interaction. In recent years, the International Workshop on Spoken Dialogue Systems (IWSDS) has emerged as one of the premier venues for researchers, developers, and practitioners to share their latest findings and advances in this field. In this article, we will provide an overview of IWSDS 2023, its history, main topics of interest, and what attendees can expect from this year’s workshop.
Introduction
The International Workshop on Spoken Dialogue Systems (IWSDS) is a biennial event that brings together researchers and practitioners from academia and industry to discuss and exchange ideas on various aspects of spoken dialogue systems. The first IWSDS was held in 1999 in Keihanna, Japan, and since then, it has been held in various locations around the world, including Germany, Italy, Singapore, and the United States.
The 2023 edition of IWSDS will be held in Montreal, Canada, from June 12-15, 2023. The workshop will be hosted by the UniversitΓ© de MontrΓ©al, and it will feature a range of exciting talks, presentations, tutorials, and workshops on the latest advances in spoken dialogue systems.
History of IWSDS

Since then, it has been held every two years, attracting a growing number of researchers, developers, and practitioners interested in the field of spoken dialogue systems. Over the years, IWSDS has become a leading venue for researchers to present their latest findings and to discuss emerging trends and challenges in this field.
The previous edition of IWSDS, held in San Francisco, USA, in 2021, featured a range of exciting talks and presentations on topics such as dialogue management, user modeling, speech recognition, natural language processing, and multimodal interaction.
Main topics of interest
The main topics of interest for IWSDS 2023 include, but are not limited to:
- Dialogue management
- User modeling
- Speech recognition
- Natural language processing
- Multimodal interaction
- Emotion and affective computing
- Human-robot interaction
- Dialogue evaluation and metrics
- Corpus and data resources

Submission and review process
To present their latest research at IWSDS 2023, authors are invited to submit their papers by January 15, 2023. All submissions will be reviewed by a program committee composed of leading experts in the field of spoken dialogue systems. The review process will be double-blind, meaning that both authors and reviewers will be anonymous.
Accepted papers will be published in the workshop proceedings, which will be available online and in print.
Accepted papers
Authors of accepted papers will have the opportunity to present their work at IWSDS 2023 through either oral or poster presentations. In addition, authors of selected papers will be invited to submit an extended version of their work to a special issue of a leading journal in the field.
Keynote speakers
IWSDS 2023 will feature keynote talks by leading experts in the field of spoken dialogue systems. These talks will provide attendees with insights into the latest advances and trends in the field, as well as new directions for future research.
